“Gentlemen, I may not have a brain, but I have…an idea.”
That line is delivered by the lovable B.O.B. (voice by Seth Rogen) in Dreamworks’ latest animated film Monsters vs. Aliens. I saw this one on a flight out to Winnipeg last week, and was surprised that I hadn’t seen it earlier. I mean, my list of favorite things to see in movies starts as follows:
1. Monsters
2. Aliens
3. Lasers
Seeing this movie should have been a no-brainer, but this one slipped past me somehow.
The Story
The movie starts off at the wedding of Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon) and follows her through her transformation into Ginormica and her introduction to B.O.B. , Dr. Cockroach (Hugh Laury), The Missing Link (Will Arnett), Insectosaurus, and General Monger (Kiefer Sutherland). Once united, they are called on to do battle with Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson), who has travelled to Earth with plans of invasion.
The Cast
The voice acting in this movie is incredible, and the cast is star-studded, with appearances by Stephen Colbert as the President, Amy Poehler as Gallaxhar’s computer, Paul Rudd as Derek,Renée Zellweger as Katie, and Jeffrey Tambor as Carl Murphy. I felt like I was watching an Arrested Development reunion, and the feeling of camaraderie among the cast members was palpable.
The Audience
This film should appeal to all ages – the jokes are clean but funny, the acting and storyline are well-done but not overly complicated, and the message being sent is a wholesome one: Monsters are great! This is definitely a movie to see if you haven’t already, and I’m already considering adding it to my DVD collection for rewatchability. Check it out.
