Get ready for the boy in tights! Peter Pan returns to the big screen titled Pan starring Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard and Levi Miller as Pan, who is taken to Neverland, where he’ll become Neverland’s ultimate hero and become forever known as Peter Pan. This legend of the “boy who never grew up” goes way back to 1904 all from a single book. Throughout the ages Peter Pan has been in many movies, books, and tv shows. Let’s take a look at the legend through history.
1904 — Peter Pan, penned by Scottish journalist turn playwright James Matthew Barrie, premieres in London. The play stars a girl so she could be lifted in the harnesses. In 1905 it makes its way to American stage featuring Maude Adams.
1924 — Finally gets made into a silent film after years of film studios asking.
1950 — It becomes a musical on Broadway starring Boris Karloff and Jean Arthur.
1953 — Disney’s animated film debut.
1990 — Peter Pan and the Pirates animated series premieres on Fox Kids, following the Darling children’s further adventures in Neverland. Starred Tim Curry as Hook.
1991 — Steven Spielberg answers the question what if Peter did grow up? In Hook starring late Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman.
2003 — Peter Pan movie hits big screens based on the beloved classic, for the first time Peter is played by a boy, Jeremy Sumpter.
2004 — Johnny Depp portraits a young J.M. Barrie who meets the family that inspires his book in Finding Neverland.
2013 — He appears on Disney’s Once upon a Time series. Now in its 5th Season on ABC.
2015 — A musical adaptation of Finding Neverland is now on Broadway.
What a legacy there. Not to mention Peter Pan was adopted as a play worldwide many times over. In 1954 starring Mary Martain as Peter and Cyril Ritchard is Hook. In 1960 it is televised worldwide, making it a template for the show we know today. Then back on Broadway in 1991 and again in 1998 both with Cathy Rigby. Now Livi Miller takes flight in this high fantasy adventure to face off with Garrett Hedlund as Captain Hook, in theaters October 9. Rated PG 111 min. Action / Adventure / Fantasy.
