Okay. I don’t know if it was the tacky music or the way they filmed it to look like a 70’s film, or if it was the terrible acting by Cameron Diaz (I am not a fan) – The Box was just awful.
I guess, since it was based off of a short story in the 70’s by Richard Matheson, it would seem reasonable to have that old movie feel to it. Unfortunately, they just couldn’t pull it off. The story was tacky, and the plot just didn’t work. Maybe the short story is better, or maybe that’s where the error began, when it was first penned. I don’t know, but I do know, if you think you will be entertained by this movie, think again. It is boring, confusing and the acting is atrocious.
I’ve seen James Marsden in other films and he did a fairly good job in The Box, given the inadequate story he had to work with. I think the producers and director would have done a much better job if they had rewrote the script with a more modern feel, updating the 1970’s tack for a 21st century palate. I’m not a fan of older movies, with few exceptions, anything pre-dating 1990’s is just not worth watching (imho), so maybe I’m a little biased with this movie trying to play retro. In any event, I would not recommend this movie to anyone, unless you have two hours to waste.
You would be better off to settle in and watch a good episode of Seinfeld or Newsradio. Maybe even read a good book like, In the Meadow. But if you insist on watching it, you’ve been warned.
