Who Should Have Won the Oscar For the Best Actor?

Word in the street has it that the best actor award for an actor in a leading role should have gone to one of three leading contenders in the 2009 ceremony. These are, namely; Mickey Rourke, Sean Penn and Frank Langella. At least these were the people carrying the most wagers at the time.

Sean Penn is rated as the favorite at 5/4 with Ladbrokes as a contender for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in the Drama category. It is believed that the winner of the GB stands automatically in the frontline for an Oscar because 4 out of 5 winners of the GB have gone on to bag themselves an Oscar according to past results. Daniel Day-Lewis got both the awards the year before it may be noted when speculations are made on this decision.

Now just suppose the gurus of tinsel biz have managed to identify what can be termed as a trend to go by, would it have been wise to bet against Penn winning the Oscar in the upcoming awards ceremony? Penn had already bagged the award in 2003 for his role in ‘Milk’. So it was the theory of most film lovers that he was likely to swoop down on the wins again. But, others based their opinion on past inclinations of the jury by saying that history repeats itself and that’s why we should think he would be a strong contender for the award, as Daniel Day-Lewis won the award in 1989 and went on to win again.

Mickey Rourke began to attract attention and a whole lot of praise for his performance in ‘The Wrestler’. He bagged the Golden Lion award at Venice after getting 98 percent positive reviews. So if Penn were to lose out to this great movie start, there will be nothing surprising about it, felt sincere followers of the actor.

Yet another fraction believed that Frank Langella could net himself the Oscar for none other than his role as President Nixon. His exact copycat style of Nixon from the talk to the walk was something that has caught a lot of attention from critics and regular cine goers alike.

Should the awards come out with another winner it would upset the applecart in the world of entertainment in 2009, concede the gurus of show biz.
