Penelope Cruz – The First Academy Award Winner From Spain

Born on April 28, 1974 in the city of Madrid in Spain, Penelope Cruz Sanchez or simply known as Penelope Cruz is a Spanish actress who made it in Hollywood. At an early age of 15, Cruz started to act professionally on television. When she turned 16, she made her first film in 1992 titled “Jamon, jamon” which received critical reviews.

Soon after, Cruz starred in several films such as ‘Open Your Eyes” in 1997, “The Hi-Lo Country” in 1999, “The Girl of Your Dreams” in 2000, and “Woman on Top” also in 2000. In addition, Cruz was also featured in commercially successful Hollywood films such as “Vanilla Sky” and “Blow” which were both released in 2001.

Cruz is a talented actress and has made films of different genres. She made a comedy film in 2002 “Waking Up in Reno”, then a thriller through “Gothika” in 2003, a Christmas-themed film “Noel” in 2004, an action film “Sahara” in 2005, an animated film “G-Force” and musical “Nine”. Of all the movies that Cruz had made, her most commercially successful movie is “G-Force” where she was the voice behind the character “Juarez”, one of the trained secret agent animals. The movie’s gross venue is estimated at more than 281 million dollars.

What is considered as Cruz’s most notable films are “Volver” in 2006, where she received nominations from Academy Award and Golden Globe and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” in 2008, where she received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first Spanish to receive the prestigious award in the history of mankind.
