‘Warcraft’ Trailer: Magic Threatens the Realm of Azeroth

This summer, Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures are taking a big risk by bringing the video game Warcraft to the big screen. While the property on which the film is based is one of the most popular video games ever, the trailer has already shown that this is some deep fantasy material, complete with different races of orcs, some powerful wizard magic, and much more.

Now a new Warcraft trailer has arrived from the international side of the film’s marketing where the title of the movie is Warcraft: The Beginning. The visual effects seem to be a little more polished for anyone who was concerned that the movie would look more like a video game cinematic. See for yourself after the jump.

We get to see a little more of Paula Patton as Garona, a half-orc, half-human who may have trouble dealing with the conflict between the Alliance and Horde. But the really exciting part is seeing more of the magic that comes from the wizard Medivh, played by Ben Foster. There’s something about magic on an epic scale in a fantasy like this that gets me excited, and I’m not even a fan of the video game series.

However, I still think Warcraft has an uphill battle to get audiences who aren’t familiar with the video game series into theaters. And with a cast that isn’t full of many recognizable names, that might make the climb even harder. Warcraft also stars Travis Fimmel as Anduin Lothar, Toby Kebbell as Durotan, Dominic Cooper as Llane Wrynn, Ruth Negga as Lady Tario, Robert Kazinsky as Orgrim and more. General audiences likely don’t know any of those actors by name, but maybe that won’t matter.

Frankly, I just hope audiences give the movie a shot, if only so it gives Duncan Jones plenty more opportunities for new projects in the future. Knowing what Jones accomplished with Moon, and even Source Code to some extent, this is a filmmaker who deserves to keep making movies for the big screen.
