Wolverine – Typical Yet Enjoyable

World Cinema is full of super hero movies. They never fail because there is always some part of the audience that will admire them. Critics can keep ranting about the story, direction or anything but fans couldn’t care less. I personally am a huge fan of these films and I appreciate good cinema too. Therefore, it is through personal experience, I can say that fans usually just need to see their favourite super hero fighting all around and it is enough to make them go gaga and the producers to earn profits. One of the most recent super hero films was The Wolverine. This Hugh Jackman starred film was probably eagerly awaited since the day it was announced that there is going to be a sequel to the first one.

One of the most beloved X-Men visits Japan to say goodbye to an old friend but finds himself trapped in a conspiracy. This film has earned a lot of dollars throughout the world and was released in various languages. And it sure was a treat for the fans. This film had everything needed to satiate the craving of a Wolverine fan; dangerous-and-gasping-loudly-in-the-theatre-action scenes, eye-widening new (and creepy to some) gadgets and some new troubles for the hero to handle. The action scene on the bullet train will scare you, excite you and you would be on the edge of your seat. Despite of the presence of such elements, this film still lacked a strong story line. It was quite disappointing to see yet another saving the damsel in distress story line. The presence of Hugh Jackman does for once makes you want to ignore these things but not entirely.

With each film about such super heroes, you get to know them better but what can truly disappoint you is the typical story. Almost all super hero movies like to revolve around the theme of saving the heroine and eventually falling in love with her. Wolverine was nothing different. He goes to Japan, finds himself in the midst of a power struggle and does anything and everything in his power (which by the way, really has reduced) to save the life of the beautiful Japanese heiress. Crossing various hurdles and a dangerous new villain, Viper, Wolverine successfully saves Mariko from the conspiracies and plots against her.

This sounds like any other movie you must have watched or heard about. The end of this film, however, is a huge surprise and for me is the highlight of the film. For die-hard X-Men fans, this will easily be a celebration deserving moment. It will definitely leave the fans wanting and waiting desperately for this series’ next installment.

I love super heroes and a super hero will always be one, no matter what. What I really feel is that there are a lot man ways to glorify a hero’s power than just showing him save a woman’s life. And it’s not like we haven’t watched such films, just a little more would be nice.
