Movie Review – Mr Brooks (2007)

Excellent. Simply Excellent. This movie far surpassed my expectations and that’s an understatement. In fact, I waited until now to watch this film because I just couldn’t see how Kevin Costner could play a believable serial killer. I mean, he’s Dances with Wolves, for God sake! But I was wrong. Way wrong! Kevin does a superb job – maybe even the best I’ve seen – ever. I mean, I was really blown away by this movie.

On top of the terrific performance by our favorite good guy, I was pleasantly surprised to discover Demi Moore is in this movie also, as well as Dane Cook. And Cook plays it clean, no dirty jokes or anything. Terrific performance from all three I think. Moore seemed a bit choppy and I don’t know if she pulled off being a detective, but Costner’s performance definitely made up for whatever Demi might have lacked.

It was interesting how this movie seemed to treat Costner’s character as the protagonist, even though he was a serial killer. As you get into it, you start to feel for the guy and realize that even serial killers have lives too.

With a story line that provides many twists and turns and quite a few “I knew it!” and maybe a couple “Oh, wow, I didn’t see that coming.” you will find Mr. Brooks a good investment for a few hours of entertainment. Have fun and if you learn any lesson from the movie it’s this: don’t leave your blinds open.
