In a straight forward story written by Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil movies), the Weyland Corporation finds a heat signature from a mysterious pyramid 2000 feet below an island in the Antartic ocean. Mr. Weyland (Lance Henriksen), the owner of the multi billion dollar corporation, himself goes on the expedition guided by an attractive & experienced ice expedition guide, Alexa Woods (Sanaa Lathan).
They find a new tunnel which was not on the site 24 hours before they arrived in the 2004 Aliens VS Predator movie. Unknown to them, the Predators, a highly advanced alien race with the technologically far superior than of humans have seen the site as well & proceeded into the underground pyramid complex. I’m quite a fan of the Predators & Paul W.S. Anderson so I had to watch the movie before I view its new sequel in the next few months.
So it would seem that the Predators are actually “the chosen ones” fated to hunt & battle the aliens. The human characters in the Alien VS Predator movie were bait in the Predators hunting game. The mysterious underground pyramid holds another alien species, frozen like in a cryogenic sleep & awakened by the ancient building’s power plant, in anticipation of a ritualistic hunting game. In fact, it was a giant queen Alien specimen like from the Aliens movie. It seems that the story came from a single comic book.
The two surviving humans in the pyramid, Sebastian (Raoul Bova) & Alexa decide that in order to try to survive their ordeal, they have to help the Predators defeat the Aliens to complete their Predators 100 years hunting ritual in the Alien VS Predator movie. Alexa is lucky to be holding one of the surviving Predator’s important weaponry that completes the Predator’s offensive gun.
It made the Predators protect her from the Aliens. Additionally, by returning the weapon to the remaining Predator & killing one alien creature, Alexa manages to persuade the Predator to fight alongside him. Furthermore, in the unexpected & somewhat ridiculous partnership (Predators have never fought alongside any creature but their own), Alexa (Sanaa Lathan) & her Predator new found friend manage to defeat the ultimate preys of the Predators.
However, the Alien Queen escapes from the pyramid in the Alien VS Predator movie. In the final battle, the remaining Predator becomes killed & she wins an honorable staff weapon of victory from the Predators. The movie is to be continued as an alien manages to sneak into the Predators spacecraft in the body of a killed Predator & so it would be the beginning of the next movie sequel Alien VS Predator: Requiem.
One would think that after thousands of years, hunting Aliens, the intelligent Predators would have an indefinite upper hand in battling the beastly Aliens. I hope that it would be the case in the future sequel. Or else, contemporary weaponry & technology from humans look far better. Well, except for the inter-planetary laser tunneling machine & invisible cloaks. Radical science fiction story even though it’s a 2004 movie; do not miss it!
