True Blood: Series Review

True Blood started its run in September 2008 and became a show with a cult following. Before I review each season and get to the main topic I’m here to discuss, I just want to say that I am a fan of the show. Now here are brief reviews of each season.

SEASON ONE- Season one is arguably the best season of True Blood. It has a very simple plot. It revolves around murders happening around Sookie and her brother Jason. To add to the drama, we have vampires. One of the most interesting things is that vampires have announced theirselves to the world, so the show can skip the usual sub plots (hiding from humans, ect.) and can get on with more important things. I also like the idea of “True Blood”, an artificial blood that is sold to vampires. The main vampire in the show is Bill. I find Sookie and Bills relationship not to convincing, but it works for the most part. The last thing is that the show is very political and it’s fun to watch.

Final Score: 9.0

SEASON TWO- Season two revolves around to main story arcs. One being Erics maker being kidnapped, Sookie and Bill must help find who did it. Eric is the second main vampire in the show and eventually fights for the love of Sookie. The second plot revolves around a maenad coming to Bon Temps and is involved in a sub characters past. Sookie and Bill have to deal with this problem when they return home. This season is a little more far fetched, but its different and that why it works really well.

Final Score: 8.0

SEASON THREE- This season introduces a lot of elements that become very important in the series. Sookie being a fairy, introducing werewolves, and introducing probably the main villain in the series so far. This season isn’t nearly as good as the first two, but is still fun to watch.

Final Score: 7.5

SEASON FOUR- This is my second favorite season. We are at a point in the series where everything is pretty settled and there aren’t going to be any more big surprises to the main lore of the series. So they have a little fun with this season. It revolves around a clan of witches trying to basically wipe out all vampires in the world. It also gets more into the relationship between Sookie and Eric. It’s well directed and acted, to make this a great season.

Final Score: 8.8

SEASON FIVE: This season finds Bill and Eric being captured by the Authority and Sookie finding out more things about her past. As of right now there are two episodes still left in this season and I’m liking where they are heading. I like the ideal of the vampires blowing up True Blood factories and rising up against humans. It could be interesting to think about what sides certain vampires will take, and the werewolves. But overall this season has been a bombshell and has left me worried for the shows quality and entertainment.

Final Score: 7.0

Series Overall Score: 8.1

True Blood is getting to the point where it’s mostly the same stuff through out. But they are introducing new ideas that could work. But the makers aren’t killing off any major characters that you care about, or any side characters. Season five has been a mix of a bunch of different plots. It’s not good. I feel like Sookie isn’t even the main focus anymore and that the show is just becoming bland. The main writer for True Blood is leaving after season five and it will be interesting in seeing which direction the series will go.

Seeing where this season is at right now, I would be happy if Vampires start a full out civil war against humans. Let this arc be the beginning of the end. Season six could pick up in Bon Temps and tie up the plots with sub characters and just get them off the show all together. Then are main characters can leave Bon Temps and do things that are actually important to the shows world and their lives. All this could lead into a seventh and final season, and end the stories of these characters.

True Blood is losing its charm and needs to do something to impress. If not, people are going to lose interest. I’m rooting for this show to make me love it again. So hopefully it delivers in the already planned season six!
